Characteristics of Extreme Right Politics in Latin America: Types and Drivers
This study examines characteristics of the rise of extreme right politics in Latin America. A comparative analysis of the cases of Chile, Argentina and Uruguay confirms that three types of extreme right politics are emerging in the region: 1) the "complete extreme right", 2) the "market-centered extreme right", and 3) the "values-centered extreme right". José Antonio Kast and the Chilean Republican Party represent the 'complete extreme right', which combines a commitment to traditional social values with the principles of a free market economy. Argentina's Javier Milei and La Libertad Avanza are prime examples of the "market-centered extreme right" that advocates radical market liberalism. On the other hand, Uruguay's Guido Manini and Cabildo Abierto represent the "values-centered extreme right" that supports interventionist economic policies while focusing on conservative social values. The study also identifies the drivers of the rise of extreme right politics in Latin America: 1) reactions to leftist politics, 2) persistent economic inequality and insecurity, 3) social conflicts related to traditional values, and 4) the influence of international networks and social media. In conclusion, while the extreme right in Latin America shares certain core characteristics, its manifestation varies according to the political, economic, and social context of each country.
