Preserving Hope: Extended Storage of Pediatric Donor Livers for Transplantation
Background: Pediatric liver transplantation (LT) is a complex and challenging field, particularly in infants, due to their distinct needs and the severe shortage of suitable pediatric donors. Extended storage of donor livers is crucial in this population, as it expands the limited pool of organs and provides a vital window of time to find a match for these critically vulnerable patients. We previously demonstrated the feasibility of extended liver storage up to 10 days in a rodent model using partial freezing (PF), a novel subzero technique in preserving organs at -15oC with a combination of controlled ice formation and machine perfusion for recovery.
