Het TOPA-onderzoek naar PTSS bij verslaving
The TOPA-study on PTSD and addiction: Background and clinical characteristics This article highlights the association between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and addiction, as well as the treatment of this comorbidity. It emphasizes the availability of various (screening) instruments to effectively recognize and diagnose PTSD, also suitable for individuals with substance use problems, including those who are still using substances. Although PTSD is common among people with addiction, it remains unclear how and when PTSD can be optimally treated in this group. This article discusses clinical characteristics and baseline results from the TOPA study, a randomized clinical trial (RCT) investigating the treatment of PTSD in addiction. Participants reported having experienced both PTSD (17.7 years) and substance-related problems (12.2 years) for many years, with the majority (63.6%) indicating that their PTSD symptoms had developed first. The results of the study emphasize the necessity for structured screening, diagnostics, and treatment of PTSD within addiction care.
