Approach bias modification training (ApBM)

Approach bias modification (ApBM) training as an adjunct to clinical treatment in patients with alcohol use disorder Characteristic features of the treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD) are the high risk of treatment drop-out and relapse. Research has shown that adding approach bias modification training (ApBM), a computerized form of cognitive training, to regular clinical addiction treatment has a beneficial effect on maintaining abstinence in patients with AUD. It reduces the risk of relapse within one year by approximately 10%. This article describes the clinical relevance of ApBM as an add-on intervention in clinical treatments for patients with AUD. First, the theoretical background of ApBM as an effective intervention within the broader category of cognitive bias modification (CBM) interventions is discussed. Then, based on relevant literature, the effectiveness of ApBM as a training method is evaluated. Finally, the application of ApBM as a supplement to clinical practice, as well as new developments in this area, are described.
