The Protest Movement in Algeria: Semantic Analysis of Slogans

Abstract Encouraged by the expansion of social networks and the emergence of a globalized digital public space, social movements, which are organized in waves and carry various demands, are now acutely imposing themselves in the daily lives of modern societies. This article, based on a varied corpus, explores the unique role of political humor that permeated the slogans brandished by Algerian demonstrators in public spaces during the popular movement. We will analyze how these humorous elements have been inscribed in these dynamics, examining the different types of political humor deployed, their themes, and their ability to challenge institutions and powers in a context of demands for democracy, dignity, and equality.
