Operational planning in distribution control centres for enhancing hosting capacity
Amidst evolving energy landscapes, Distribution System Operators (DSOs) navigate a dynamic terrain shaped by emerging technologies and increased distributed energy resource (DER) integration. This paper explores the paradigm shift from passive to active DER management, highlighting the evolution of Distribution Control Centres (DCC) and the emergence of distribution operational planning. Dynamic Operating Envelopes (DOE) are envisioned as a transformative concept to optimize DER usage within grid limits. Factors influencing DOE development, such as grid visibility and analytical methods, are analysed, emphasizing their role in comprehensive resource management. Key objectives include evolving the role of distribution operational planning, elucidating DOE dynamics, and highlighting its strategic importance amidst evolving distribution systems. The paper also underscores the criticality of strategic planning as utilities deploy advanced systems like distribution automation and DER management.
