The DSO's online service for customers to enable efficient use of capacity with an electricity connection – case Helen DSO
The surge in clean energy investments poses a challenge in urban areas like Helsinki, Finland, where power demand at customer connection points is set to surpass current capacity. The transition to cleaner energy solutions is evident in Helsinki's properties, where the use of heat pump solutions, electric vehicle (EV) charging systems, and rooftop PV systems has increased. The growing power demand prompts customers to consider a significant increase in connection size. To address this, a Finnish distribution system operator (DSO) Helen Electricity Network Ltd. (Helen DSO) has developed an online service allowing customers to monitor their electrical load, assess available capacity, and make informed clean energy investments. This prevents unnecessary capacity reservations and promotes the use of existing free capacity, thereby reducing costly distribution network expansions in dense urban environments.
