Using state estimation voltage limitation as indicator for renewable generation curtailment
High levels of renewable generation can lead to temporarily voltage issues, particularly since the distribution network was not initially designed to handle large amounts of fluctuating and intermittent renewable energy generation. For short-term periods, curtailing renewable generation may be necessary to prevent voltage violations. State estimation is used to estimate the current state of the distribution network, including voltages, powers and loading at all nodes. It considers measurements from various operational and measurement devices to estimate the state variables of the system. Voltage limitation state estimation specifically focuses on identifying and addressing voltage-related issues and notifying the distribution network operator of such violations. This paper is focused on using voltage limitation state estimation as an indicator for renewable generation curtailment. Parallel calculations processes that recognize when voltage limits are being approached or violated will be examined in order to better understand the validity and the trueness of the triggers that can then initiate further curtailment measures. The case study is focused on state estimation data in relation to voltage violation of the voltage limits and the comparison to smart-meter derived voltages to check the correctness of the estimated voltage state at LV service locations. Curtailment measures can then be considered as a point to conditionally approve and increase more renewable generation integration in distribution network.
