Methodology to increase hosting capacity through voltage control of distribution network based on technical requirements of smart inverter

Increasing continuously renewable energy reduces system robustness and causes supply and demand problems in the event of serious system faults. Accordingly, domestic, and foreign power utilities are establishing and operating grid connection regulations for renewable energy, and technical requirements are becoming more diverse as the system changes. Additionally, methodology is needed to improve the flexibility of distribution networks and hosting capacity of renewable energy based on technical requirements. Therefore, in this paper, we define the technical requirements of smart inverters as below and analyze their necessity in situations of voltage violations due to system faults. In addition, we propose a method to improve the hosting capacity of renewable energy through voltage control of smart inverters for restoration of the distribution network. The voltage control algorithm of smart inverters is implemented using MATLAB-Simulink as below, and the VRT (Voltage Ride Through) model for technical requirements is also implemented. Using this model, we simulate the voltage violation scenarios for faults and analyze the impact on distribution network recovery according to the characteristics of smart inverters.
