Preventing congestion management by modelling cable temperatures: a real-world case
We show for a real-world grid connection containing solar and wind generation that congestion management can be prevented by using dynamic modelling of cable temperatures. Despite the fact that peak currents exceed the rated current of the cable, the cable temperature stays within the safe operating range. We apply Monte Carlo sampling on critical input parameters of the soil and cable positions to quantify the reliability of our model prediction under unavoidable input parameter uncertainty. We conclude with a discussion on how to implement this approach in congestion management systems and discuss further research.
