Multiport converter design and optimal location in distribution grids

Multiport converters (MPC) are presented as a general power electronics solution that can contribute to facilitate a massive integration of distributed renewable generation while enhancing the interconnection of multiple electrical grids and equipment. The MPC implement an integrated solution combining the advantages of energy storage and other grid support equipment. This paper presents an optimisation-based methodology to size and allocate multiport power converters together with a techno-economic comparison to other conventional approaches. This methodology includes AC power flow constraints and is evaluated in a case study based on IEEE 33 bus system to identify the best scenarios where multiport converters can be considered as a potential solution.
