Local flexibility approach from ENEDIS, E-DISTRIBUZIONE, and E-REDES to boost grid hosting capacity
The transition from fossil fuels to renewables in the energy industry driven by carbon neutrality goals and the growing adoption of distributed energy resources, like solar panels and wind turbines, is reshaping the traditional dynamics of the energy sector. DSOs must address challenges arising from the variability of renewable sources, evolving demand patterns, and the need for resilient solutions. In this dynamic context, flexibility solutions emerge as a complement to optimise network reinforcement plans. These solutions play a pivotal role in supporting distribution system hosting capacity during emergencies or while network reinforcement is undergoing, equipping operators with the tools and mechanisms necessary to surmount challenges and leverage opportunities arising from the evolving energy sector trends. Considering the regulatory framework is not completely defined at the country level, this paper aims to share ENEDIS, E-DISTRIBUZIONE and E-REDES practical experiences in flexibility solutions. Therefore, this paper will contribute to the dissemination of valuable knowledge and practical insights into flexibility solutions; sharing the results of each country's tenders for flexibility service acquisition can guide and inspire other DSOs, researchers, and policymakers seeking flexibility solutions and provide a reference point for best practices in developing local, flexible markets.
