OPF-based determination of hosting capacity for wind power generation in high-voltage distribution grids

This paper introduces a novel method using optimal power flow (OPF) analysis to enhance distribution grid capacity for wind energy integration. Unlike conventional methods, it focuses on detailed modeling of the operational area (active and reactive power) for each wind turbine. Our OPF-based approach aims to maximize wind energy absorption by the distribution network through detailed PQ area modeling, improving grid integration accuracy. It also identifies optimal wind turbine locations within the grid, considering the impact on grid stability. The methodology accounts for uncertainties in supply tasks assessing their effects on hosting capacity and turbine placement. Simulations across different grid models validate our method’s effectiveness, demonstrating significant improvements in grid capacity for wind energy absorption and offering strategic insights for turbine placement. The results show that the positioning of wind turbines is robust against uncertainties in the supply task. Depending on the scenario, a total of 765 MW to 838 MW of additional wind power can be integrated. Furthermore, it can be concluded that the positioning of wind turbines for an exemplary grid area near the substation to the transmission grid level is advantageous.
