Application of operating envelopes to increase hosting capacity for smart charging facilities in urban distribution grids

The present work explores the application of operating envelopes to increase hosting capacity for smart charging facilities in urban distribution grids. The concept of an operating envelope, which is a dynamic active power limit provided by distribution system operators (DSO) via a bi-directional DSO-to-customer interface, is analysed using the example of a parking garage with an intelligent smart charging hub. The study shows that compared to static limits, introducing dynamic operating envelopes significantly reduce violations in number and extent while increasing hosting capacity for additional charging stations for electric mobility. Further research is planned to evaluate the impact on transformer limits and further develop the DER-Interaction-Module (Distributed Energy Resources) as a DSO-to-customer interface.
