Bidirectional EV smart charging in buildings with public parking (V2B): UC representation using the e-mobility systems architecture framework

The rapid growth of e-mobility is making control of peak demand in the power system increasingly challenging. Bidirectional EV charging, and in particular vehicle-to-building (V2B) strategies can support buildings and grid with necessary flexibility and load balancing, while helping offset load intermittency from renewable energy generation. This paper depicts a V2B use case (UC) on long-term smart charging for energy management of large public facilities. The analysis is supported with details from a V2B implementation at Porto Airport, in Portugal, where this UC is being tested as part of the EU-funded DriVe2X project. The UC is comprehensively explained with visual support from interoperable layer representations from the E-Mobility Systems Architecture (EMSA) framework. Modelling of e-mobility UCs with the EMSA helps demonstrate its market and technical requirements, as well as the ensuing benefits for the relevant actors, thus facilitating understanding and implementation of vehicle-to-everything (V2X) strategies and technologies.
