CONTACT STRESSES IN THE FOUNDATION OF A RETAINING WALL WHEN DETERMINING ITS STABILITY

This paper investigates a gravity retaining wall of cantilever type with a vertical front face and an inclined rear face. An analysis of shear and soil pressure on the retaining wall is performed, considering one-sided interaction with the foundation. The study focuses on examining the magnitudes of the resultant normal and tangential contact stresses in the foundation of the wall. Optimal parameters for the length of the cantilever retaining wall foundation on the active soil pressure side are determined to ensure structural stability. The moment when the structure becomes a geometrically changeable system is also identified. The finite element method (FEM) is used for numerical modeling, solving the unilateral contact with friction as a linear complementarity problem (LCP). Distributions of contact forces in the foundation of the wall and the dependencies of structural stability on the foundation length are presented.
