Comparative Analysis Between SiC Converter Designs based on Parallel-Connected Discrete Devices and Power Modules
This paper presents a comparative analysis regarding the adoption of parallel-connected devices and power modules for power converters oriented to medium-power applications. Therefore, considering a 20-kW three-phase voltage source in-verter as case study, different SiC devices are selected from various manufacturers and a techno-economical comparison is described, taking into account Figures-of-Merit, losses models, layout issues and estimated costs as evaluation parameters. The results demonstrated the high applicability of discrete solutions for medium-power applications due to their lower cost and higher performances compared to the power modules, still highlighting the importance of carrying out accurate comparative analysis for properly selecting the optimal solution for a specific application.
