Electric Road Systems for Electric Vehicle Long-Distance Travel: A Multi-Agent Simulation Approach

Electric road systems (ERSs) present a transformative advancement in transportation electrification, offering continuous charging capabilities for electric vehicles (EVs) during travel. This innovation has the potential to significantly mitigate range anxiety by enabling in-motion charging, thereby enhancing the overall efficiency of electric mobility, and reducing the frequency of charging stops during long-distance trips. By decreasing the need for larger EV batteries, ERS can also contribute to lower emissions. This paper details the implementation of ERS within the multi-agent transportation simulation (MATSim) framework, leveraging the EV-Contrib library to assess ERS as a viable charging infrastructure for long-distance EV travels. The results provide an evaluation of ERS deployment and its impact on dynamic charging behaviors.
