Energy Optimization in Software: A Comparative Analysis of Programming Languages and Code-Execution Strategies

This study investigates the differences in energy consumption between various programming languages, comparing those executed natively with those run on a Virtual Machine. The results challenge existing assumptions about the energy efficiency of software development practices. The findings reveal a positive correlation between the code execution strategy and resource consumption. Additionally, the study identifies key factors influencing the energy efficiency of applications beyond the choice of programming language. This research offers valuable insights for developers aiming to optimize energy consumption in their projects and prompts further questions regarding the future of development platforms and sustainable programming practices.
