Multi-Objective Design of a Bidirectional DC-DC Converter for Battery-Powered Locomotive

This paper presents a design procedure to optimally choose the topology of a 200 kW bidirectional DC-DC converter for a battery powered train for 3 kV DC railways. Based on actual semiconductor tehcnology, multiple converter topologies are analyzed, considering also the design requirements for the magnetic components. The simulated power losses, evaluated in PLECS, along with an estimation of costs and volumes allow us to identify the optimum converter topology for this application.

Abstract

This paper presents a design procedure to optimally choose the topology of a 200 kW bidirectional DC-DC converter for a battery powered train for 3 kV DC railways. Based on actual semiconductor tehcnology, multiple converter topologies are analyzed, considering also the design requirements for the magnetic components. The simulated power losses, evaluated in PLECS, along with an estimation of costs and volumes allow us to identify the optimum converter topology for this application.
