A Distributed Simulation of Electrical Machines on FPGAs Using Low Latency Communication Protocol
Due to their high switching frequencies, real-time simulations with short frame times are essential for simulating power electronics systems. While Modern Digital Real-time Simulation (DRTS) platforms offer off-the-shelf simulation resources, they require significant cost. In this research, we present a low-cost, high-performance simulation approach that can be utilized to simulate large power electronics systems in real- time. We use a modular programming approach to partition and test the simulated model into two Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). We developed a communication module based on existing link-layer protocols optimized for lower latency and high bandwidth to meet real-time timing requirements.
