Improved Charging Technique for Reducing the Charging Time in Nickel Manganese Cobalt Type Lithium-ion Batteries

The charging time of the high-powered Lithiumion battery packs is one of the primary drawbacks of Electric vehicles. To this day, the charging protocol followed is the constant current and the constant voltage, where the battery initially charges in a constant current state and transitions to a constant voltage state when the battery voltage reaches peak value. This paper proposes a modified charging technique that effectively reduces the charging time by decreasing the time in a constant voltage state. This charging technique is applied on a 4.2V, 2.2Ah Nickel Manganese Cobalt battery in the laboratory setup. The results show a decrease in the charging time of 9.7% compared to the existing charging technique.
