Gradient-Based Predictive Pulse Pattern Control for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Drives

Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives for traction applications are often operated at low switching frequencies to reduce losses. As, however, the switching frequency decreases, problems arise, such as high current distortions and poor dynamic performance. Optimized pulse patterns (OPPs) can be employed to improve the current quality, but they need to be properly handled to achieve good transient response. This papers presents a gradient-based direct model predictive control (MPC) algorithm for PMSM drives that manipulates OPPs in real time such that superior steady-state performance and fast settling times are achieved. The efficacy of the proposed method is tested with simulations, and its superiority over a field-oriented control (FOC) scheme is also demonstrated.
