Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer Optimization Using Adaptative Termination in Center-Fed Resonant Array

Conventional Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) systems, with a single coil transmitter, used in automotive applications, have a high cost-to-energy transfer ratio as consequence of the short range and high number of power components required, making them a costly solution to implement. The utilization of a resonant array as the transmitter significantly extends the distance and time frame during which energy is transferred to the receiver, with minimal cost increase. Furthermore, the power transmission, range, and energy transfer can be improved through a centerfed resonant array. However, a consequence of this solution is the need for a termination resistance at both ends of the array, whose value affects the performance and behavior of the system. In this work, an adaptative termination and control strategy on both ends of the array is proposed so that the energy transfer between transmitter and receiver can be maximized, taking full advantage of a center-fed array used in dynamic WPT systems aimed at automotive applications.
