Protective and Curative Effects of Green Tea, Truffle Extracts and the Antifungal Agent Voriconazole on Fungal Keratitis

Eye diseases are a prominent contributor to global visual impairment and blindness. The study was carried out in the city of Ramadi, where a total of 50 clinical samples were obtained from individuals who had attended eye clinics. DNA extraction was employed to verify the identified fungus species. A Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) method is introduced for detecting and identifying micro¬bial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) in the gaseous environment surrounding filamentous fungi. The study investigated the minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) and minimum inhibitory concentration of the isolates using green tea extract, truffle extract, and voriconazole. Aspergillus niger exhibited the greatest level (66.67%), while Fusarium oxysporum and Fusarium solani recorded 23.33% and 10.00%, respective¬ly. MIC of green tea extract on Aspergillus was 75 mg/mL after 24 hours and its MFC was 2.69 mg/mL; MIC of green tea extract on Fusarium was 50 mg/mL after 24 hours and its MFC was 0.514 mg/mL. While MFC of voriconazole was 0.314 mg/mL, 0.386, respectively after 24 hours, MIC of truffle extract on As¬pergillus and Fusarium was 20 mg/mL after 24 hours and its MFC was 2.67 mg/mL, 2.70, respectively after 24 hours. The MFC of voriconazole was 0.285 mg/mL and 0.514, respectively after 24 hours. Antifungal activity of green tea extract shows that 75 mg/ml concentration of alcoholic extract gives a high inhibitory effect on Aspergillus compared with 50 mg/ml concentration effect on Fusarium while truffle had the same concentration’s effect 20 mg/ml on all isolated fungal.
