A Qualitative Study on Female Counselors′ Experience in Counseling with Adult Male Clients

This study aimed to explore the expectations and attitudes of male clients toward counseling and to understand what female counselors experience in counseling with male clients. Interviews were conducted with 12 female counselors. The content was analyzed using an inductive analysis method. As a result, 16 areas and 38 subcategories were identified in two themes. In the first theme, “characteristics of male clients and attitudes toward counseling as perceived by female counselors,” the following were identified: “existence as male-female in counseling relationship,” etc., and in the second theme, “female counselors’ experience in counseling with male clients,” the following areas were derived: “conflict due to vie for upper hand” etc. Through this study, we have drawn implications for effective counseling and counselor training for adult men by understanding the expectations and attitudes of male clients in counseling and the experiences of female counselors.
