Sustainable Advancements in Aqueous Homogeneous Reactors: Thermal-Hydraulic Behavior and Radiolytic Gas Bubble Dynamics in Uranyl Sulfate Solutions

Objective: This study aims to analyze the thermal-hydraulic behavior and radiolytic gas bubble dynamics in uranyl sulfate solutions within Aqueous Homogeneous Reactors (AHR), emphasizing their potential for sustainable medical isotope production. Theoretical Framework: The research builds upon nuclear reactor theories, particularly those concerning radiolytic gas dynamics and thermal-hydraulic interactions. It highlights the advantages of AHR as a technology aligned with global sustainability goals by enhancing efficiency and reducing waste. Method: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted using the ANSYS-CFX software on a conceptual AHR design derived from the ARGUS reactor. Key parameters such as fuel solution temperature, velocity, and gas volume fraction were analyzed under varying conditions of radiolytic gas generation. Results and Discussion: The simulations revealed significant impacts of radiolytic gas bubble formation on reactor performance. A reduction in bubble generation from 100% to 10% increased the average fuel solution temperature by 3.96°C and decreased its velocity by 50%. Bubble velocity and volumetric gas fraction reductions of 68% and 46%, respectively, resulted in lower turbulence intensity, affecting thermal-hydraulic behavior. Research Implications: These findings demonstrate the dual role of radiolytic bubbles as both a challenge and an opportunity to optimize reactor safety, efficiency, and sustainability, contributing to advancements in green nuclear technology for medical applications. Originality/Value: This study contributes to the literature by integrating sustainability considerations into AHR analysis, offering innovative insights into managing radiolytic gas effects to enhance reactor design and operation.
