IMAGE OF A SURGEON IN THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING AND RUSSIAN-SPEAKING LINGUISTIC-CULTURAL SPACE OF THE SUBSTANDARD

Medicine is one of the most important spheres of public life and all the processes taking place in the medical industry acquire linguistic expression. Modern realities reflected in the language of medicine convey, among other things, the peculiarities of their perception by the native speaker of a particular language, are fixed at a sub-standard lexical level, nominating categories and phenomena significant to society. One of these categories - vivid and capacious - is the linguistic image of a doctor. The article considers the surgeon’s linguistic and cultural type, formed on the basis of materials from substandard lexicographic sources and texts of naive discourse, namely English-language and Russian-language medical forums and social media pages. The actual research material is 24 substandard lexical units selected by continuous sampling from current substandard lexicographic sources of English and Russian, as well as 138 messages recorded on the pages of the relevant Internet resources. The authors focus on identifying the basic and additional semantic characteristics of substandard lexical units that nominate the surgeon/хирург concept at the level of English and Russian-language dictionaries of substandard vocabulary, as well as updating the selected lexical units on the pages of medical forums and social networks. The manifestation of some and the irrelevance of other additional semantic characteristics at the level of naive medical discourse allows us to present the key features of the image in question in the traditions of substandard Russian and English. The authors attempted to reveal and describe the image of the surgeon through the prism of its perception by representatives of the English-speaking and Russian-speaking linguistic and cultural community. The methods of lexicographic, lexicological and semantic analyses, as well as semantic interpretation, classification, quantitative calculation and the method of tabular display of the data obtained as a result of the study have used during the study.
