The Impact of Safety Climate on Safety Behavior in Manufacturing Workplaces - Focused on the mediating effect of safety leadership and job stress management efforts

This study was conducted to establish safety management strategies and to suggest practical measures to improve worker safety by verifying the mediating effects of supervisor safety leadership and job stress management efforts in the relationship between the safety climate and worker safety behavior in manufacturing workplaces. For this study, we used the results of the '10th Occupational Safety and Health Survey' conducted by the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency's Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute in 2021. Among the total 3,255 manufacturing workplaces with 20 or more full-time workers, 3,028 workplaces having at least one supervisor were used as analysis data. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 24.0 program for descriptive statistical analysis, validity and reliability verification, correlation and multiple regression analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis. As a result of the study, first, it was confirmed that the safety climate of a manufacturing workplace has a positive (+) effect on worker safety behavior. Second, it was confirmed that the safety leadership of supervisors and the management efforts of job stress had respectively a significant mediating effect in the relationship between safety climate safety behavior of workers. Through this study, it was empirically confirmed that the safety leadership of supervisors and the job stress management efforts in manufacturing workplaces played an important mediating role in the relationship between safety climate and safety behavior. This suggests that strengthening the safety climate in manufacturing workplaces can prevent industrial accidents by promoting the safety behavior of workers through strengthening the safety leadership of supervisors and effective management of job stress.
