A Study on the Dramatic function and figurative approach of the character of Luka, in The Lower Depths by Maxim Gorky - Focusing on the Play Production in Arts College

It is reasonably to suppose that the character of the Luka, in The Lower Depths, motivate theme. That is, the character is a motivational factor in The Lower Depths. Luka spreads good influence to the people in inn.Because of Luka’s good behaviors, he reminds me of Luke who written the Gospel of Luke. The Gospel of Luke focus on the underprivileged like stranger, the poor, women, and children. Therefore, The Gospel of Luke has a nickname: ‘the gospel of the stranger.Although, the question of the specific association, between the character of Luka and Luke, remains unsettled, it has been recognized similarity between two. As the purpose of this paper is concerned, the point is not propagation of Christianity but human values and potentiality between two.Luka’s good influence goes deep into the heart of the theme in The Lower Depths. Throughout Luka’s good influence and relationship with other characters, this research attempts to analyze Luka’s dramatic function in The Lower Depths.Also, this paper is intended as an analyze acting approach by physical action for the character of Luka. Stanislavski insist that subtle and complex feeling could be expressed in simple physical actions. According to Stanislavski, physical actions help actors to live on the role. Not only that, physical actions could stimulate inner truth in actor.
