Comparative analysis of “the Naked Woman Sculpture of the Jeondeung Temple” Legend and the Drama “The Jeondeung Temple”

In this paper, based on a comparison and analysis of the narrative development and thematic consciousness of the folk tale <the Naked Woman Sculpture of the Jeondeung Temple> and the one-act drama <The Jeondeung Temple>, several characteristics shown in the content conversion process from a folk tale to a drama are identified First, it is a change in composition. The drama <The Jeondeung Temple> changed the original story of <the Naked Woman Sculpture of the Jeondeung Temple> by composing the content of the original story into a past life story inserted into the frame, thereby increasing interest. In addition, it has a composition format that fits the 12 stages of the hero's journey created by Vogler, and thus has a composition format that fits the drama grammar. Second, it is the aspect of change in the character. It can be seen that the character settings are being diversified by creating and inserting a diverse group of characters other than those who appear in the original tale. In addition, the two-dimensional character found in the original tale is transformed into a threedimensional character that fits the drama genre, and the surrounding characters are given individuality suited to their respective roles. Third, there is a change in the theme. By making the linear development of love, betrayal, and revenge dealt with in the original tale three-dimensional, devices that give the inevitability of the development of events are placed here and there. First, the ‘love’ element was multi-layered and various obstacles and conflict elements were inserted in the main character’s achievement of love. In addition, the ‘betrayal’ element also dilutes the low-level nature of the betrayal element shown in the original tale by ensuring the inevitability of a betrayal with a reason based on the protagonist’s morals and love. Meanwhile, the ‘revenge’ element provides a rational reason for the lukewarmness and passivity of revenge shown in the original tale by making the object of revenge commit suicide. These elements of change in drama content can be said to be major factors that enable the story to overcome the limitations of the original tale due to its linear development of events, flat character settings, and simple themes, and to be reborn as an interesting.
