Study on the Possibility of Linking Generative AI and Humanities Reading Education

This empirical study explores the possibility of utilizing generative AI in human reading education. Focusing on Kim Young-Ha's long novel, “Farewell,” we explored a reading education method utilizing generative AI; and applied and analyzed it to actual classes to assess its possibility. First, we built the foundation of reading activities by linking Raphael's QAR question types and the reading process (right there (factual reading)-thinking and finding (inferential reading)-with my own strengths (appreciative, critical, and creative reading] ). Then, we organized the activity content as “reading activities: reading books while asking questions - preparatory learning: accumulating prior knowledge - post-reading activities: reading books while thinking”; and we applied the post-reading activities utilizing generative AI to the reading program. As a result, we confirmed the possibility that the reading education method presented in this study can help, first, to accurately understand the contents of the book; second, to expand thinking while experiencing various thoughts; and third, to read richly and deeply. At the same time, we were able to reaffirm the necessity and importance of this in that it is possible only when sufficient prior education on the characteristics, limitations, questioning methods, and ethics of the use of generative AI has been conducted.
