Analysis and Experimental Verification of Test Methods for Evaluating the Durability of Protective Doors against Shock Waves : Base on Shock Tube Results

This study aims to analyze the test methods for evaluating the explosion pressure resistance of protective doors and to verify these methods experimentally. Currently, domestic regulations primarily assess the durability of fire doors through sandbag impact tests. However, this approach has limitations in adequately evaluating the performance of fire doors under extreme conditions, such as explosions. In response, this study applied the explosion pressure resistance test newly introduced in the 2021 KGS Code to more precisely verify the durability of protective doors used in industrial facilities. The experimental results confirmed that the tested doors met the explosion pressure and deformation criteria specified in the KGS Code, demonstrating high durability. However, compared to international standards, domestic standards lack comprehensive testing methods that consider both static and dynamic pressure, making it challenging to fully assess protective performance in fire or explosion scenarios. This finding suggests the need for additional testing methods to ensure that protective doors provide sufficient protection in actual explosion events. Accordingly, this study emphasizes the need to improve domestic testing standards for protective doors by incorporating both static and dynamic pressure testing methods, as seen in ASTM and EN 13123. The establishment of such a testing framework is expected to contribute to enhancing the safety of protective systems in high-risk environments, including high-pressure gas facilities and various industrial sites.
