HELPING CHILDREN AND COMBATING CHILD HOMELESSNESS DURING THE FAMINE OF THE EARLY 1920S IN KAZAKHSTAN
This article explores the specifics of aiding children and addressing homelessness during the early 1920s famine of Kazakhstan. It details the Central Children's Commission's phased assistance, including nutrition and evacuation, in collaboration with central and local famine relief organizations. Efforts to save minors intensified in autumn 1921 with the involvement of foreign charitable organizations. This study revealed that the homelessness crisis mirrored broader state crises, primarily driven by the destruction of family life due to mass mortality from famine and epidemics. The author analyzed archival materials to assess the scale of the problem and effectiveness of the interventions.
