Hydrocarbon Geological Conditions in the Persian Gulf Basin and the Recent Trends in Exploration and Development Activities

Qian, X.M. and Zhang, Y.S., 2024. Hydrocarbon geological conditions in the Persian Gulf basin and the recent trends in exploration and development activities. In: Phillips, M.R.; Al-Naemi, S., and Duarte, C.M. (eds.), Coastlines under Global Change: Proceedings from the International Coastal Symposium (ICS) 2024 (Doha, Qatar). Journal of Coastal Research, Special Issue No. 113, pp. 763-767. Charlotte (North Carolina), ISSN 0749-0208. The Persian Gulf Basin is a large sedimentary basin developed on the Arabian Plate, one of the richest basins in the world in terms of hydrocarbon resources, with favourable conditions for the formation of hydrocarbons. With the advancement of development technology and equipment, the cost of oil and gas development in the sea has been decreasing, and oil and gas development activities in deep and ultra-deep water are emerging. At the same time, the emergence of energy transition trends may reduce the importance of traditional fossil energy sources. This paper analyses the hydrocarbon geology of the Persian Gulf Basin in the light of the available information, discusses the trend of hydrocarbon exploration activities in the region in recent years, and concludes that the importance of the Persian Gulf Basin in the field of oil and gas exploration and development and energy supply in the world will not decline.
