Hydrodynamic Modeling and Flushing Assessment of Khawr Al Batah, Oman

Ahmed, A.S.M.; Abdelkader, A.; Khalil, A., and Othman, M., 2024. Hydrodynamic modeling and flushing assessment of Khawr Al Batah, Oman. In: Phillips, M.R.; Al-Naemi, S., and Duarte, C.M. (eds.), Coastlines under Global Change: Proceedings from the International Coastal Symposium (ICS) 2024 (Doha, Qatar). Journal of Coastal Research, Special Issue No. 113, pp. 634-638. Charlotte (North Carolina), ISSN 0749-0208. The future waterfront development of Khawr Al Batah, Oman, which is an enclosed bay, requires good water refreshment and suitability for navigation operation. This assurance is made by the availability of the robust hydrodynamic modeling developed by Deltares (Delft3DFM Suite). The hydrodynamic model was developed using the recent bathymetric survey carried out within the bay and part of the open sea (Gulf of Oman) and hydraulic measurements. Although the empirical assessment for the existing condition reveals good water refreshment, the related results of the hydrodynamic and flushing model confirms this finding except for the stagnation zones which are not predicated by the empirical assessment. Various scenarios (dredging and reclamation works) are investigated and ultimately the preferred scenario was recommended as it shows good water flushing and circulation as per relevant PIANC guidelines.
