Preliminary Assessment of Potential Ocean Wave Energy Resources in the Coastal Areas of the Philippines

Galano, R.M.C. and De Leon, M.P., 2024. Preliminary assessment of potential ocean wave energy resources in the coastal areas of the Philippines. In: Phillips, M.R.; Al-Naemi, S., and Duarte, C.M. (eds.), Coastlines under Global Change: Proceedings from the International Coastal Symposium (ICS) 2024 (Doha, Qatar). Journal of Coastal Research, Special Issue No. 113, pp. 665-669. Charlotte (North Carolina), ISSN 0749-0208. The wave energy potential at 37 points in the coastal areas of the Philippines was quantified in the study. Specifically, the wave energy flux (WEF) at each point was computed with consideration to the classification of the waves. The results showed that points in coastal areas facing the Pacific Ocean have much higher wave energy potential than those in coastal areas facing the West Philippine Sea (WPS). It also showed that the WEF at a point can go as high as 31.86 kW/m along the east coast and 16.45 kW/m along the west coast. Although some points failed to qualify for the estimation of wave energy generation, most points from almost all provinces still exhibit high wave energy potential. Out of 37 points, 30 were selected for the quantification of annual wave energy generation (AWEG). The highest AWEG for points that used Wave Dragon, Pelamis, and AquaBuoy are 5010.15, 780.48, and 254.54 MWh, respectively. After estimating the AWEG at all points, a wave energy resource map showing the wave energy potential at all points was established.
