Core-Scale Modeling and Simulation Study on Carbon Mineralization and Rock Property Changes Induced by CO2 Solution Injection into Basalt

This study analyzed the effectiveness of CO 2 storage in basalt by simulating carbon mineralization during the injection of a CO 2 solution into basalt cores.Porosity changes were assessed by modeling carbonate precipitation and basalt dissolution based on geochemical reactions. The correlation between the porosity and permeability was examined using the power-law equation to calculate the change in pressure during injection. The simulation results were validated by comparing the experimental data acquired from the Cheorwon region with respect to carbonate precipitation, porosity, permeability, and pressure difference.A sensitivity analysis was performed to examine the effects of CO 2 solution type and mineral composition on carbon mineralization using basalt samples from Cheorwon and Jeju as well as sandstone sample. The modeling and simulation methods used in this study can be applied to analyze the carbon reduction and mineralization trapping of the CO 2 stored in basalt formations.
