A Study on the Characteristics of Light Expression in the Architectural Spaces of Tadao Ando

This study is a research paper on the expressive characteristics of light in the architecture of Tadao Ando, aiming to explore the expression of light as reflected in his architectural works. The research methodology employs literature review and case study analysis. First, a literature review was conducted to investigate the background and conceptual framework of Tadao Ando’s architecture, and characteristics of light were extracted through an examination of relevant literature. Based on previous studies, the extracted keywords were categorized and organized into three characteristics of light expression, each further analyzed through three detailed keywords. The findings reveal that light in Tadao Ando’s architecture goes beyond a functional role, contributing to the emotional depth of space through design strategies. Empathetic characteristics highlight light's role as a medium of emotional engagement, where mystery, healing, and immateriality enable spaces to transcend the limitations of physical entities, adding spirituality and resonance. Environmental characteristics emphasize the interaction between light and the surrounding environment through diffusion, projection, and orientation, fostering a harmonious coexistence of architecture and its context. Visual characteristics, utilizing aesthetic quality, temporality, and form, employ light as a medium of artistic expression, enhancing spatial tension and visual impact. The study discusses the characteristics and modes of expression of light in architectural spaces. Finally, through the analysis of five iconic architectural works by Tadao Ando, it examines how these characteristics are manifested in his designs and evaluates their correlation with the broader traits of his architecture. This research aims to contribute to the theoretical foundation for the application of light in modern architectural design.
