A study on the Developement of Protection Zone Road Signs : focusing on the School Zone in Korea
Since 2019, Korea has installed protection zone information facilities and speed reduction facilities in School Zones under the 5030 Safety Speed Policy. However, In the current protection zone guide sign, it is difficult to intuit the protection zone, and in particular, it is impossible to guide the rotation direction of the protection zone at intersections. Therefore, this study studied the design of road signs based on road signs that can guide directions. Based on the current status of protected area information signs, this study approached from the perspective of information design and public design that reduces the amount of information and integrates the hierarchy of public information to establish the direction of developing road signs in user-centered protected areas. Accordingly, various design plans that comprehensively utilize direction lines, arrows, colors, and symbols were proposed for the design of protection zone road sign. In addition, by surveying design experts FGI and public preference surveys, the final plan to utilize arrows and colors was confirmed and pilot-installed in some sections of Anyang City. As a result of the study, the design of the protection zone road sign made it possible to announce the direction of the protection zone, and the larger the road, the more simple information design is needed, the more supportive measures such as the use of intersection road signs and road markings are needed for efficient guidance of the protection zone, and traffic safety signs need to reduce text and color information and improve symbolic pictures.
