A Study on OSMU Content Development Strategy : Focusing on Webtoons

This study deeply diagnosed the current status and challenges of OSMU in the webtoon industry, explored the strategic direction in terms of webtoon IP valuation, creator role, collaboration with other industries, etc., and designed the OSMU strategic structure in detail including webtoon IP discovery and evaluation criteria, development guidelines for each content type, creator-centered collaboration process, and data-based decision support system. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy was verified from various angles, and practical measures were derived for the development of the webtoon OSMU ecosystem. This study can greatly contribute to the sustainable growth and high value-added creation of the webtoon industry and is expected to provide important implications for strengthening the overall competitiveness of the Korean content industry. The proposed strategic structure starts from identifying webtoon IPs with high commercial potential and involves developing standardized methodologies for IP valuation. In addition, clear guidelines for converting webtoons into various forms of content such as movies, OTT series, games, and goods products are presented. This framework emphasizes a creator-centered approach to promote smooth collaboration between webtoon writers and stakeholders in other industries, and is meaningful in setting the necessary criteria for the decision-making process.
