The Effectiveness of Manuka Honey in Increasing Osteoblasts and Chondrocytes and Reducing Osteoclasts in the Healing Process of Rabbit Mandibular Symphysis Fractures
Background: Mandibular fractures often occur in accidents or trauma. Healing of mandibular fractures can occur in 2 ways: primary and secondary healing. Honey has many benefits, such as anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial which are useful in healing wounds. This research wants to study the activity of Manuka honey in bone mandibular bone healing process as one of the alternative modalities to accelerate the bone healing process by increasing the number of osteoblasts and chondrocytes as well as reducing the number of osteoclasts in New Zealand White Rabbit. Methods: This research is an experimental study with a randomized control trial study design involving New Zealand white rabbits that have been selected aged 6-9 months with a body weight of 1,900 grams to 2,500 grams and no visible anatomical abnormalities and taken from the laboratory animal unit of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Airlangga University. In total, 16 rabbits will be involved in this study. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software. Results: Regarding osteoblast parameters, the control group had a mean of 8.425, while the treatment group had a mean of 11.95 (p=0.004). Osteoclasts in the control group had a mean of 3.9, while the treatment group had a mean of 1 (p=0.001). In addition, the number of chondrocytes in the control group had a mean of 1.5, while the treatment group had a mean of 11.1 (p=0.000). Conclusion: The application of Manuka Honey effectively increased the number of osteoblasts and chondrocytes and reduced the number of osteoclasts on day 14 of rabbit mandibular bone healing.
