Synthesis and Antibacterial Activity of Some New Drug Loaded Polymaleimide Derivatives
In this work new polymers have been synthesized via free radical polymerization method of 3 different drug substituted maleimides in THF using Azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator in nitrogen atmosphere at 65oC. for 18 hrs. The maleimides monomers were synthesized by conjugation of 4-maleimidobenzoic acid with amino group of three drugs (mesalzine, theophylline, and 4-aminoantipyrine). These monomers were polymerized to give three polymers (e-f). The synthesized polymers were characterized by using H-NMR, and FT-IR spectroscopic analytical techniques. Drug release and swelling percentage were examined at acidic and basic different pH. The intrinsic viscosities of these polymers were evaluated at 25 ºC using an Ostwald viscometer and based on their solubility. All produced monomers' physicochemical characteristics and the antibacterial activity of the derivatives was evaluated against Escherichia coli (E. coli), and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus).
