Predicting Mortality of ICU Patients According to the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment Scoring System

Medical practitioners use the sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score as a tool to assess the severity of a subject’s illness and predict their clinical outcomes. This score takes into account the proper functioning of six different bodily systems, including the circulatory system, pulmonary system, nephrotic system, hepatobiliary system, neurological system and hematological system. SOFA score provides an extensive evaluation of the subject’s medical condition with their response to treatment by measuring the function of these systems. However, the mortality rate in the critical care unit is subject to variation depending on the progression of an individual patient’s illness. Hence, it is vital to continuously evaluate a subject’s condition throughout their ICU stay. The patient’s likelihood of survival correlates with the severity of their ailment and the number of organs that are malfunctioning. The medical score is based on diverse tests that are routinely conducted before the patient’s hospital discharge. The SOFA score is employed to anticipate the patient’s probability of being readmitted to the emergency department and the likelihood of mortality, as per research findings. The SOFA score is an effective instrument that integrates various quantifiable factors to make these projections However, a trend of decreasing score ratings is noticed in the days following the patient’s discharge, based on the score assessment. Over time, a closer examination of the score components showed that the scores for heart and platelet disorders are significantly associated with mortality, rendering them the most pertinent for investigating other markers. With the progression of time, numerous advancements have been made, leading to the development of modified SOFA score and Quick SOFA score. The application of the score guarantees consistent outcomes across diverse healthcare settings and aids in identifying any unfavorable reactions to treatment. The SOFA score has emerged as a widely accepted and valuable tool for healthcare professionals in numerous medical facilities, that are emergency departments, critical care units, and clinical trials.
