Comparative Study of Fully Encased Composite Column Under Axial Load Using Different Codes

This paper presents a comparative study for fully encased composite (FEC) columns between AISC-LRFD, Euro code 4, and BS 5400: Part 5, for the axial load only. These columns were experimentally investigated by previous authors, with different sizes, lengths, and materials properties. The load capacity of these columns was determined using equations given by these three codes. results obtained from these three codes may vary considerably, because of the different design considerations adopted in these codes. The composite column strengths obtained from AISC-LRFD ( ), Euro code 4 ( ), and BS 5400( ), were compared with the test results ( ). the design strength predicted by the three specifications were conservative for the tested specimens The statistical results show that the mean values of , and ratios were 0.71, 0.75 and 0.62, respectively. That indicates the Euro code 4 approach generally gave closer predictions than the AISC-LRFD then the BS 5400 method.

That indicates the Euro code 4 approach generally gave closer predictions than the AISC-LRFD then the BS 5400 method.
