The Impact of IB PYP-Based English Lessons on Primary School Students’ Reading Skills

This study investigates the impact of English lessons based on the IB PYP (Primary Years Programme) framework on primary school students' reading skills. The research was conducted at a primary school in Korea, involving 16 students from grades 4 to 6 who participated in an 8-week English reading program based on the principles of the IB PYP. Pre-and post-assessments of reading performance were conducted, focusing on reading comprehension, fluency, and the ability to identify central ideas. The results showed a significant improvement in students' reading skills, particularly in their comprehension of texts and ability to engage in higher-order thinking. Furthermore, students reported positive attitudes toward the lessons, highlighting the benefits of collaborative and inquiry-based learning approaches. The study provides insights into the implementation of the IB PYP framework in public education and the potential benefits of this pedagogical approach for developing students’ English reading abilities.
