Understanding and responding to individuals who have decided to detransition

As the phenomenon of detransitioning gains more research and social media attention, it is essential for health and human service providers, including Christian social workers, to develop competency in responding to the complex issue. By drawing upon existing research, case studies, and rational choice theory, we propose a humanistic service delivery framework that Christian social workers can utilize to ethically and responsibly begin the process of assisting individuals who have identified as detransitioning as a goal, regardless of their typology. This framework is grounded in six core values of the Social Work Ethical Principles, which serve as a foundation for preparing Christian social workers for service delivery. Prior to service delivery, we recommend that Christian social workers prayerfully reflect on three key considerations under each value. This framework aims to provide a novel approach for Christian social workers to support individuals who begin to navigate this sensitive and often controversial topic, while also adhering to the highest ethical standards of the profession.
