Comparative Study of Indoor Localization Methods Using RFID Technology

With encouragement all over the world for the number of such applications in areas like healthcare systems, logistics, and inventory management, indoor localization using Radio Frequency Identification technology seems to be quite promising. It is against this background that this article discusses three leading methods of indoor localization and hence for this purpose: empirical indoor path loss model, LANDMARC model, and triangulation model. This paper aims to review these methods in the light of certain criteria, upon which would then help in deciding which of these methods are effective if any object is to be located accurately while at rest inside indoor environments. In this quest, advantages, disadvantages, and operational considerations related to each method have been broadly discussed to add valuable input to literature directed towards RFID-based indoor localization systems. Results of the comparative analysis show that the empirical model is very flexible and cost-effective compared to the triangulation, which gives high accuracy but needs a more complex implementation, the LANDMARC model is simple and precise but may be less adaptable to specific localization needs in different environments.
