Alzheimer's & Dementia: Behavior & Socioeconomics of Aging – Purpose, Vision, and Guidance
ior & Socioeconomics of Aging (BSEA).A critical purpose of this journal is to offer a premier location for the examination, understanding, discussion, and application of research findings and scientific perspectives regarding diverse trajectories associated with aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) as shaped by multidimensional behavioral, social, and economic factors.A guiding premise of this journal sets forth that biological, behavioral, sociocultural, environmental, and economic factors represent foundational elements of structural, social, and individual determinants of health, which cumulatively form the basis of diverse trajectories and lived experiences of aging and ADRD.A comprehensive discussion of structural, social, and individual determinants of health rests outside the scope of this editorial; however, this journal agrees with burgeoning bodies of literature that ADRD and other deleterious outcomes in aging can be delayed or prevented by modifying or rectifying negative structural and social determinants and by assessing and amplifying those that support optimal outcomes in aging. As BSEA begins its ascent, this editorial shares the purpose and vision of the journal and key guidance for authors and other contributors.BSEA's purpose and vision consist of four conceptual components, highlighted here and discussed in further detail below: (1) examination of behavioral, social, and economic factors at micro, meso, and macro levels; (2) application of research findings and scientific perspectives;(3) diversity within diversity; and (4) interconnectedness. Before we move on to detailed insights into the four components of the purpose and vision of BSEA, we must note the lack of explicit mention of disparities and equity. This overt absence is intentional as BSEA aims to enact equity throughout all its editorial, peer review, and dissemination activities.More specifically, addressing disparities and facilitating equity in aging and dementia represent central tenets of BSEA as it aims to widely disseminate scientific knowledge to impact and inform the development and implementation of interventions, strategies, guidelines, policies, and other evidence-based materials to examine and support optimal outcomes in aging for local, national, and global populations.Furthermore, BSEA asserts that both disparities and equity are at the core of the field of aging and ADRD, with reverberations and impacts reaching every concept, population, methodology
