İlkokul Öğretmenlerinin Sınıflarında Karşılaştıkları Disiplin Sorunları ve Çözüm Önerileri

In this study, it is aimed to reveal the opinions of classroom teachers about the discipline problems they encounter in learning-teaching processes at primary school level and their solutions. The study was designed according to the qualitative research model and phenomenology method was used as the research design. The study group consisted of 25 classroom teachers working in primary schools in one of the largest districts of Mersin province in terms of population. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview form, which is frequently preferred in qualitative research. The descriptive analysis method was used to analyze the data, and the codes and categories that emerged as a result of the data analysis were transformed into findings in line with the determined themes. According to the findings of the study, while the participant teachers perceived the concept of discipline as “order” and “obeying the rules”, the most common disciplinary problems they encountered in the learning-teaching processes were “showing violence/bullying behaviors towards their classmates, speaking without permission, wandering around the classroom for no reason, being interested in extracurricular subjects, constantly complaining about classmates, and making noise in class”. According to the participants, the most important causes of discipline problems were family-related factors, followed by factors related to students, school and teachers, technology and media, education system, and peer group. The most common solution methods used by the participants to solve discipline problems were reinforcing and rewarding correct behaviors, discussing the rules with students and determining the classroom rules together with the students, meeting with the family, adjusting the seating arrangement in the classroom, assigning tasks to active students and punishing those who do not follow the rules. While the participants emphasized that parents should be trained first for the solution of the problem, they also offered suggestions regarding the duties and responsibilities of school administration and teachers, the education system and students.

The study was designed according to the qualitative research model and phenomenology method was used as the research design.
